ARTIST PROFILE
TONY POPE
After a career in education I opted for early retirement and went back to the classroom as a fulltime learner. In 2012 I studied at Waiariki Polytechnic (now Toi Ohomai) and passed the Graduate Diploma in Art and Design course.
The following year I attended Whitecliffe College of Art and Design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Since then I have painted in oils with a particular interest in Rotorua’s unique land and city scapes. The paintings on display in the shop are the result of this focus.

My Process
How satisfying it is to:
Identify and photograph a view that appeals to me
Prepare the canvas with an imprimatura (Background wash) of Burnt Sienna
Draft in the gridlines to get the proportions correct and draw the view onto the canvas
Put a CD into my paint spattered CD player (because I still do not know how to use Spotify!)
Apply the key painting principles of working: background to foreground, dark to light and large to small
Coming to the point in the painting process where I know that the painting is going to work!
Signing the finished work (almost always in Cadmium Red)
Measuring and making the frame
Completing all final touches, Inserting the painting in the frame and getting it ready for hanging
My Product
In my painting I aim to produce works that:
Reflect the best I can do at this time in my development
Are faithful to the subject matter while reflecting my own style
Are technically proficient
Are aesthetically pleasing
and Hopefully connect with the viewer in a meaningful way
